Exploring Western Uganda: A Journey of Wildlife, Culture, and Adventure
From July 5th to July 7th, 2024, a notable 2-day expedition was undertaken by myself and an associate, Philliam, through Western Uganda. Commencing our journey in Kampala, we commenced a picturesque 6-hour drive to Fort Portal, the doorstep to Uganda's natural marvels. Big 5 Tourism Group Ltd team led Avery's dynamic itinerary which I have shared but the team was very knowledgeable and experienced in the field together with the local tour guide I enjoyed my time taking me there again and again.
Day 1:
Our venture commenced promptly upon arrival in Fort Portal, an enchanting town nestled at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains. The approach to Fort Portal was awe-inspiring, adorned with undulating hills and verdant tea plantations flanking the route. Upon our arrival, we enjoyed a delectable dinner at Fort Portal Gardens, relishing local cuisine in an alluring setting. As night descended, we embraced the lively nocturnal scene at The Pavilion and Afrikaans Club, immersing ourselves in indigenous music and culture.
During daylight hours, we explored the fabled AmabereCaves (Mabere ga Nyinamwiru) and were led through these mystical caverns, marvelling at the stalactites and stalagmites reputed to be the breasts of Nyinamwiru, a prominent figure in local folklore. Additionally, we trekked through hills enveloped by exquisite crater lakes, offering awe-inspiring vistas and a tranquil ambience.
Day 2:
The second day unfolded as a wildlife spectacle at Queen Elizabeth National Park. Engaging in an exhilarating game drive, Philliam and I were enthralled by close encounters with lions, hyenas, and a diverse array of other wildlife. The splendour of the park's terrain and its regal denizens left us spellbound. As twilight descended, we made our way to Acacia Hotel Mbarara for a thoroughly deserved repose. However, the night was far from over. We revelled in the animated nightlife of Mbarara, patronizing hotspots like Shooters and Vybz Club, where we absorbed the local entertainment and hospitality.
Our Western Uganda safari proved to be an epic, action-packed odyssey that epitomized the unspoiled beauty and vibrant culture of Uganda. Our foray through stunning landscapes, exhilarating wildlife encounters, and lively nocturnal diversions is a wellspring of inspiration for those seeking to explore the marvels of this extraordinary destination.
Day 3:
Following a restful evening, we partook in a buffet breakfast and commenced our return journey to Kampala. We traversed the pastoral plains of the cattle corridor and later crossed the Katonga River to arrive at the equator in Kayabwe. Subsequently entering the city through Busega, we proceeded to take the northern bypass, ultimately arriving in Jinja city at our point of origin.
